Stake Conference in Vietnam! (Week 31)

Monday May 7, 2018

Hello everyone,

This week I got to experience my first stake conference in Vietnam! Well, I guess it isn't technically a "stake conference", as there are not enough members here for a stake yet, but it was the equivalent idea here. It was very nice, they shared a lot of things to try to help strengthen the members here. And the church building where it was held was super nice! It looks quite impressive, and even has a garden in it! My parents should be able to share photos of that. Well, it was a great first experience for me of a stake conference here, and my Vietnamese is certainly improving, I believe I understood most of what was said. I am still working on the Vietnamese though, it sure is not easy...

Things have mostly been good this week. I don't know if I have mentioned this yet, but a lot of the elders in my apartment had been sick lately. Well, this last week it caught up to me. The last three days were a little rough with headaches, and coughing particularly, but luckily Sister Hassell prescribed some medicine and I am feeling quite a bit better today. Despite that, we still did a lot of work last week, and got a lot done. We met with some of our investigators this week, and they came to the stake conference! I think they really enjoyed the experience.

One thing I should probably mention was that the beginning of this week was a little slow. A lot of people were out of town. Monday was a holiday where no one works, so we didn't have our YSA activity. And on Tuesday, we had one student in the English class the Elder and Sister Holt teach with my help. Still, it was a good class, and the student I think enjoyed the one on one focus. And he really understood the spiritual thought on the purpose of knowing "what is included in your ticket", referring to a talk from Elder Uchtdorf on a man who went on a cruise, but did not fully enjoy the experience as he thought all the activities cost money. You can look up the video on it under the title of "Your Potential, Your Privileges". It is a very good video. The student really took it to heart and expressed the importance of finding the real joy in life such as through the gospel. He has investigated the church before. We don't know if he will come back, but his response showed great understanding of this principle, and all in the room could feel the Spirit witness of the truths he shared.

Well, luckily everyone has come back in town, so we are all good to go for this week! We are starting to teach a member temple classes this week. Going to the temple is such a wonderful experience, and we are excited to help prepare this member for that. We also have zone conference on Wednesday, and should be able to learn a lot there from our mission leaders too! And of course we will do many other good things this week, and will do it all with God watching over us and with His Spirit to guide us.

Well, that about does it for this week. And just a heads up, next week is Mother's Day (Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there! And especially to my own wonderful mother who has raised me so well, and influenced me so much!), and accordingly, I get a phone call home to my mother! As such, I may not have as much time to write a big group email for everyone if I have time at all. So I apologize in advance for that, but will hopefully be able to write more in two weeks! Until then!

P.S. Also be on the heads up for the upcoming photos of the Artinus Museum... It was a very fun place, and the photos will probably put at least a little smile on your face. Who says missionaries can't have fun?

Please note, no missionaries were actually eaten by sharks during this photo shoot.

God Works in Mysterious Ways... (Week 30)

Apr 30, 2018

Hello everybody!

Sorry for not getting out a real email last week, I got busy with some other things. The last two weeks have been pretty good. Not too much out of the ordinary to mention, but there is one particularly interesting experience I would like to share. Here in district six we now have a new person that has been attending church. His name is John, and he is from China. He lives really close to the church, and last Sunday, the 22nd of April, he decided to come into the church. Apparently he was under the impression it was an English school, and to his surprise it was a church building. He actually ended up staying and found it to be pretty interesting. He doesn't speak Vietnamese, so he listened to the English translation. We invited him to our English class and he also came to that. And this week he came back to church and stayed the whole time! He has not yet begun learning the lessons, but seems to have enjoyed the experience of church and seems very interested in learning more. We can't say anything for sure yet, but if things do work out, it will be interesting to say the way he learned about the church was coming to it thinking it was an English school. As mentioned, sometimes God works in mysterious and quite interesting ways... We will see how things go in the upcoming weeks.

Our other investigators here continue to do well. Lately, we have been sharing a good bit from conference talks. It really is great having modern prophets and apostles from whom we can receive direction from the Lord, and their words really help us in teaching others! In addition, we have also visited several members further away lately, which has been good. They are always very kind and appreciative. It also means I get to bike a lot!

Our English activities also continue to go well. This last week was interesting with the spiritual thought. We had three students stay in the class I was teaching, and one didn't know Vietnamese, so I actually ended up getting to give it in English. It went well, as I explained who God was, how we were created after His image, and how he is our Father. Those present included the aforementioned John, and another new student named Nam, whom Elder and Sister Holt had invited to come to class. Apparently he and Elder Holt work out at the same time every morning and came into contact that way. He also seems like a very good guy, and is interested in hearing more about what we believe. Our investigator, Anh Huy was also there, and he told me he enjoyed the spiritual thought as well.

Besides that, we are also preparing for our quad annual big English event. Every three months they have a big activity. This time the theme is based on the board game "The Game of Life". It should turn out fairly interesting.

Alright, well I do believe I have to go for the week. Today, my district is heading over to the 3D Artinus Museum here in Ho Chi Minh City. There should be plenty of good photos for next week! Until then!

Not much time today, but a few pictures! (Week 29)

April 23, 2018

Hello everyone!

I am sorry to say, but I don’t have much time to post today. I do have some photos though, so hopefully that will tell a bit of the story. Believe it or not I am learning to cook – stir fry anyone?

Speaking of food, we actually found a Kentucky Fried Chicken! - okay, so they call it "Texas Chicken" but it is definitely a KFC. Also, believe it or not, they also have Dunkin Donuts here. It's always fun to find something related to back home for me. Now if only I could find Taco Bell...

By the way, read the ladies shirt, it will crack you up! She had an ASU shirt! And she didn't even know what it was! It was pretty funny! The other thing I wanted to mention before I went was that we had someone accidentally show up to church on Sunday, I will tell you that story next week though. Anyways, there were several things they wanted us to do today for training, and I did run out of time. I will write double next week! I love you all so much! And will be at the Artinus Museum next week, which is awesome! I am now out of time! I love you!
